Convergence & Divergence: The Family Aesthetic

Three Generations of Vision — Cunningham and Partridge

A Traveling Exhibition Celebrating Over 100 Years of Artistic Achievement

In a San Francisco darkroom in the 1920s, five-year-old Rondal stood on a wooden box to watch his mother, legendary photographer Imogen Cunningham, rock developing trays as images appeared on silver gelatin paper. Decades later, he would photograph for 90 years. This traveling exhibition brings their work—and their father's—together publicly for the first time.

Convergence & Divergence: The Family Aesthetic features over 100 photographs, etchings, and prints from three artists who collectively shaped American modernism: photographer Imogen Cunningham (1883–1976), etcher Roi Partridge (1888–1984), and photographer Rondal Partridge (1917–2015).

CURATORIAL VISION

Curated from personal archives, the exhibition traces how artistic vision transmits—and transforms—across generations. Three artists, two generations, one family: Imogen pioneered modernist photography alongside Group f/64; Roi mastered etching en plein air, carrying copper plates into the wilderness; Rondal documented suburban sprawl and environmental change. Their shared subjects—landscape, botany, portraiture, self-portraits—reveal their common sensibilities and divergent approaches.

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Imogen's iconic Magnolia Blossom and portrait of Frida Kahlo
  • Roi's technically brilliant landscape etchings created directly from nature
  • Rondal's street photography, environmental work, and botanical studies
  • Documentary films by Meg Partridge (daughter of Rondal Partridge)

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

This is the first comprehensive exhibition examining these three artists together. It offers unprecedented access to personal archives, fresh perspectives on familiar figures, and a new understanding of how artistic vision is transmitted—and transformed—across generations. The exhibition combines family history, photographic history, and environmental history woven together.
